Plans to add graphics settings? (11 replies and 3 comments)

Howdy, I just purchased the sim today and got it all installed. I can play the design it part, but can't play the drive it part. Even at 640x480 the game is a slideshow. I can play games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim just fine, but this one seems to lag bad. I am wondering if there are plans to add a feature to toggle reflections, trees, houses, etc.

That's strange, it runs at 450 fps on my 680X. Are you on a DirectX 11 machine?

There are only a couple of settings but one of them can make a big difference. In the design screen, hit ESC and "options." Turn off the boat reflections and it should increase the frame rate quite a bit.

If you do in fact have a DirectX 11 graphics card, one other thing you could turn off to improve performance in that same window is the water spray. Let me know how it goes.

It appears the water spray is what was doing me in, thanks for the help! Now time to try the designs I've been making!

Great! Glad that did the trick.

I should probably add an adjustment for the amount of spray in a future version. It's fast on my card but apparently it's too much for some DirectX 11 hardware.

Would you happen to know what graphics card you have? Are you running a laptop by chance?

i dont know what graphics card im running but i had the same problem, im running it on a laptop though so that may be whats doing me in

I'm using a desktop with an integrated chip. It's the Radeon 8570D. I had an Nvidia 6 series but it actually died three days ago.

Thanks, guys. I've changed the system so you'll get three settings in the next patch: Off, Low, and High.

High is what we currently have. Low is everything turned down to about 25% of the High value. Not sure if that'll still kill your graphics cards or not, but it's worth a shot.

I hope to release the patch today and will let you guys know here when it's ready to go. After that it'd be helpful if one or both of you might try the new setting and let me know if it runs acceptably or not. I'm running a 680X graphics card which is about 4 year old hardware, but still pretty good by today's standards. Having the water spray on doesn't even affect the frame rate with the 680X card, so I figured it'd be ok for most others too, but apparently not. I got an email yesterday from another new player that had the same problem, so at least three of you are running hardware that can't quite handle the spray with the current settings.

I'll also have the spray turned off by default for new players so they don't run into this.

Thanks again for the helpful feedback. 🙂

Ok, the new patch (v1.213) is up. The next time you run the sim it'll update automatically as usual. Question for you guys:

Does the new "low" setting run acceptably, or is the frame rate still too low?

If you're on a desktop, what graphics card are you running ? If you're on a laptop, maybe you could post the model number and I could look it up?

Hey Todd, loving this sim! I have some FPS readings for you at the different settings. These are at 1024x768 res with boat reflections off.

Water Spray FPS Readings

Off - ~125

Low - ~16

High - ~2

PC Specs are below:

Processor: AMD A8-6500 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics

Video Card: AMD Radeon HD 8570D

RAM: 8.0 GB

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (build 10586), 64-bit

I hope this info helps. If you need anything else, I'd be more than happy to help.

The 8570D is an integrated chip too.

Wow, that's a staggering difference in frame rate. Integrated chips have always been notoriously slow compared to desktop cards. The water spray system makes very heavy use of a compute shader which is supposed to be a separate pipeline which basically means it runs almost parallel to the rest of the graphics processing. On most modern cards the spray should have virtually no (or at least only a little) effect on the frame rate, while it's abundantly clear from your test that this is very much not the case with your integrated card. I don't know how the hardware works, maybe in an integrated card there aren't really two separate pipelines or the compute shader pipeline is running some other way. Maybe it's emulated or something, I don't know. Your frame rate changed between low and high at about the same ratio as the difference in processing, so the regular graphics stuff would appear to be blocking while it's waiting for the compute shader to finish. Definitely good to know.

Anyway, your test is a real eye opener and I appreciate you taking the time to run it and post the results. I'll definitely keep this in mind if I do more with compute shaders later on. I.e., leave options in there to turn them off for the integrated chip crowd.

This patch also should be turning off the spray by default so this doesn't bite other people in the future. More people than I expected are running this on laptops, it seems to be quite common. There are few things in life more disappointing than buying a game and running it only to find the frame rate is horrible AND the graphics are generally less than stellar. Ugh..

Glad to help. I've been in the flight sim community for years, so I'm used to trying to duke it out with the graphics to get a game running smoothly lol. The graphics don't bother me any, I'm in it for the physics. This sim still has better graphics than the default FSX scenery for interior, and upstate Alaska, LOL. I really like it, I've learned a lot about boats in the past couple days. Just hit 110 MPH yesterday.
